Impact Of Internet On Reading

Abstract



This article discusses the significance of reading in the academic as well as social lives of an individual. Reading makes a person academically sound and socially aware of the world around. With change of media from printed to digital internet now has overpowered the reading today. Youth is the most influenced class of the society which seems to be totally dependent on internet. Reading through internet has developed abilities like browsing and scanning, keyword spotting, one-time reading, non-linear reading, and reading more selectively as compared to in-depth reading which comes with reading of books. Reading of books inculcates abilities like that of analyzing, comprehension and highlighting which is missing in reading through internet. Internet reading is time saving and enables multiple access to books but makes one an impatient reader as reported by various studies. The printed media thus cannot be replaced completely by internet.
