Priti Jain

Abstract

Due to advancement of technologies, academic libraries and user communities both have been completely transformed. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has provided new ways of information management, dissemination and enhanced access to information resources. As a result, academic librarians have assumed new roles to keep pace with the ever-changing information needs and expectations of library patrons. This transformation was inevitable because of the changes in education system in academic institutions. This paper discusses the major changes in academic institutions and their impact on academic libraries. The paper also discusses the recent trends and challenges in academic libraries. Finally, the paper suggests a framework for a 21st century academic library. This paper is based on an in-depth desk-top review of literature and the author’s own experience and points of view.
