Role and Impact of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) in Library Services in India

Abstract

This article stresses the significance of Information and Communication Technology in current Information era. It mainly explains various types of ICT in development of digital libraries and reference services being provided in the digital environment such as web based Information and reference services, search engine service, digital and online co-operative catalogue services and personal ICT services etc. This paper emphasizes present scenario of digital library services in India. It showcase the initiatives taken by UGC India, the INFLIBNET Centre, DELNET, IITs, RECs, National Research Organizations/ Institutions of India in digitalization of libraries and connecting various information centers through ICT in order to provide digital library services. It further suggests that how to improve the skills and proficiency in information professional to meet the challenging and ever changing needs of reading community with available ICT technologies.
