Challenges Faced by School Libraries in Promoting Reading Culture Among Secondary School Students: A Case Study

Abstract



The study aimed at appraising the challenges faced by school libraries in promoting reading culture among secondary school students in Rivers State, Nigeria. The survey research was adopted using a case study approach with reference to six secondary schools selected from the Rivers State School System. The questionnaire was the instrument used in eliciting data for the study. The population of the study is made up 5754 students with 384 students as sample size drawn using Yaro Yamanne statistical formula. The results indicates lack of current books and information materials, inadequate and unattractive environment, shortage of professional staff, insufficient reading chairs/tables, lack of e-resources and poor funding. Measures to be taken to encourage reading culture include provision of funds, adequate resources and allotting of official hour to reading in the school time table. Addressing the challenges indentified by management of the school libraries, policy makers and state government will bring about user-satisfaction and inculcating good reading habits.
